“By opening the TOP 200 Ukrainian furniture manufacturers, one can confidently say that 95% of them are exporters. Moreover, almost each of them can be named as a leader in implementing Lean practices – or you can simply visit their factories to see that everything is organized.”
– Oksana Donska, Board Member of UAFM, Co-founder of Oakhunt
In the world of international trade, it is rare to find a buyer willing to pay for chaos – whether in accounting, management, or production halls. On the contrary, order, transparency, and discipline become competitive advantages that build trust in the company and open doors to foreign markets.
Lean, Kaizen, 5S and other practices
Lean manufacturing (Lean) is a management philosophy based on the Toyota Production System. Its core idea is the elimination of all types of waste (time, material, human resources) to create more value for the customer with fewer resources.
But Lean has a whole “family” of practices that companies implement in different ways:
- Kaizen – the Japanese approach to continuous improvement through small daily steps.
- 5S – a system for workplace organization: sorting, set in order, shine (cleanliness), standardize, sustain (discipline).
- Kanban – a method of managing production using visual cards to avoid overproduction.
- TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) – equipment maintenance to minimize downtime.
- Just-in-Time – producing and delivering exactly when needed, without excess stocks and warehouses.
Each of these systems has its own focus, but they are united by a culture of discipline and respect for processes.
Lean as the foundation of export
Analyzing Ukrainian furniture manufacturers, a clear correlation can be seen: those who establish order in their processes enter export markets and secure positions in the EU or the US. Orderliness in production automatically means:
- clear quality standards;
- cost control and predictable pricing;
- transparency for auditors and partners;
- ability to scale.

It is no coincidence that Ukraine’s largest furniture producer – Modern-Expo – has become a true “Mecca of Lean.” Delegations from all over Ukraine come there to study lean manufacturing practices and see how order on the factory floor translates into global competitiveness.
The role of UAFM in developing Lean
The Ukrainian Association of Furniture Manufacturers (UAFM) has been systematically investing in spreading Lean culture among companies for several years:
- organizing training programs and Lean schools,
- conducting factory tours to see practices first-hand,
- inviting renowned consultants such as Bohdan Mazurkevych and Olha Peretiatko, who help companies implement Lean in practice.

This is how a community of manufacturers is formed – not just making furniture, but building modern competitive businesses capable of entering global markets.
Why “laziness” is not an option
Export is a tough game, played by the rules of international buyers. Everything matters here – from accuracy in issuing invoices to cleanliness in the warehouse. Chaos is always costly, and in international trade it shuts down access to contracts.
So the choice is simple: Lean or laziness? Those who choose Lean enter new markets; those who remain in chaos stay confined to local realities.
If your company is planning to export but has not yet implemented Lean practices – now is the time to act. Oakhunt helps businesses not only find new markets but also prepare for international requirements.
